Virus King - Chapter 39
Chapter 39: The Host Who Delivered Herself to the Monster!
TL: YYang
“Requesting backup! We need backup!”
One guard after another shouted frantically into their radios.
Their gunfire poured out in torrents, but against that massive figure, it proved completely useless.
They could only look on in despair as that seemingly bloated, clumsy creature—a huge mound of flesh—suddenly moved with terrifying speed, flattening one guard after another with a single slap, turning them into a pulp!
“Run!”
At this moment, Lu Li had only one thought in her mind.
Beside her, the intern cameraman Xiao Zhou, who had volunteered to join the goddess on this dangerous mission, abandoned his camera without a second thought and sprinted toward the car parked at the base of the hill.
Get in the car!
Only in the car could they escape this horrifying monster’s grasp!
Lu Li snapped out of her daze as she watched Xiao Zhou dash for the vehicle. She ran down the small hill and reached the car by the roadside.
To her relief, Xiao Zhou hadn’t started the car yet; he was waiting for her.
Gasping for breath, Lu Li jumped into the passenger seat, too winded to even catch her breath, and shouted, “Quick, drive… just go!”
But Xiao Zhou, sitting beside her, didn’t move, his face ashen.
“What’s wrong?!”
Lu Li’s voice trembled with panic.
Xiao Zhou stared blankly ahead, his gaze fixed on the giant factory building by the roadside.
From here, he could clearly see, if not as vividly as from the hill, what was happening in front of that enormous creature.
He watched as guards, armed with submachine guns, were torn apart, crushed, or swallowed whole by that colossal figure as if they were mere toys.
Hearing Lu Li’s voice, Xiao Zhou finally muttered dully, “I don’t know why… the car won’t start!”
“How could that be?! It was fine when we got here!”
Lu Li was on the verge of tears. She wanted to tell Xiao Zhou to get out so she could try it herself.
But then, veins bulged on Xiao Zhou’s forehead as he desperately stomped on the brake and pressed the ignition button. The brand-new van gave a weak, low hum, then fell silent like an old, failing machine.
“How could this happen? Why now…”
If Chen Bai were here, he could give them an answer.
The apocalypse was only two days away from erupting in full force.
The cosmic magnetic field of the Cosmic Will was already beginning to take effect!
Many mechanical devices were about to lose their functionality.
Only a few electrical devices, due to various reasons, could still retain some limited use.
Everything else—guns, cars, anything mechanical—was slowly losing effectiveness.
And as bad luck would have it, Lu Li and Xiao Zhou found themselves caught right in the midst of this change!
“It’s all your fault! If it weren’t for you dragging me to this godforsaken place, I wouldn’t be dying here with you, you stupid bitch!”
A sudden outburst of furious shouting broke the silence, leaving Lu Li momentarily stunned.
She looked over at Xiao Zhou, who just moments ago had been calling her “Sister Lu” in his polite and respectful way, doing his best to appear capable and courteous.
Now, his face was twisted in anger, veins bulging with rage, a look of pure hatred contorting his features.
Lu Li bit her lip, gazing at the frantic Xiao Zhou without saying a word.
They had seen it all too clearly from the hill.
There was no way they could outrun that monstrous mountain of flesh with just their legs!
Certain death awaited them.
The most terrifying thing wasn’t death itself; it was the helpless, despairing wait for death to descend.
That was the ultimate torture of this world.
Lu Li wanted to say something, but in the end, she could only part her lips and murmur two words:
“I’m sorry…”
She had indeed wanted to capture some big news. Even though she was already a host, she still chased risky stories, just as she had when she first started, hoping to make her mark.
Yet now, she found herself in this life-threatening predicament.
And she had dragged someone else into it with her!
Those three words might have been better left unsaid, for they seemed to set off an explosive rage in Xiao Zhou.
“What’s the damn point of talking about it now?! Why the hell won’t this goddamn car move?!”
“Should we… try running instead?!”
Lu Li frowned, watching Xiao Zhou frantically stomping the brake and hitting the gas pedal.
“Run, my ass! Didn’t you see what that thing just—”
Xiao Zhou’s words cut off abruptly.
Lu Li, about to say something, also froze in place.
Right as they were cursing in frustration, the rearview mirror caught a flash of light, followed by the sound of a horn on the deserted country road.
Talk about a sudden twist of fate!
Neither of them could think twice. They flung their doors open and stood in the middle of the road.
Sure enough, just a short distance away, a black van was heading their way fast!
Seeing their desperate gestures, the van gradually slowed down. Xiao Zhou immediately ran over.
“Please, open the door! Let us in! There’s a monster up ahead—just drive, hurry!”
The window rolled down, revealing a cold, stunning woman with short hair. Even in a moment like this, Xiao Zhou couldn’t help but be struck by her beauty.
What a gorgeous woman!
She wasn’t quite as striking as Lu Li, but her sharp, intense presence carried a unique allure.
“If you don’t want to die, get out of the way!”
“Miss, there really is a monster up ahead. Our car won’t start—please! If you don’t take us with you, we’re dead for sure! Please turn around!” Lu Li pleaded, her voice pitiful.
The woman’s face remained impassive. She was about to frown when a voice with a hint of amusement crackled over the intercom from behind her.
“Let them get in, why not?”
Without saying a word, the woman, Leng Shuang, closed the window, but the back door clicked open.
In that instant, the two felt a glimmer of hope as they finally glimpsed a chance at survival.
Without a second thought, they lunged for the door, clambering into the van. Only once inside did they catch their breath and glance around, albeit in an undignified posture, at the two people seated in the back.
One was a woman in a black and white ink-style qipao, her neck adorned with a diamond necklace, and a bracelet of translucent pink diamonds on her wrist.
The sheer quality of the jewelry left no doubt about her wealth, yet the diamonds didn’t seem gaudy on her. They only made her appear even more poised and regal.
This woman must have a thing for diamonds, Xiao Zhou thought to himself.
The other person was a young man dressed in black, looking somewhat like a bodyguard.
More importantly, Xiao Zhou couldn’t shake the feeling that this young man looked oddly familiar.
But Lu Li had already blinked in surprise, staring incredulously at the woman who sat, looking down at her from the seat with a gentle smile.
“Director Song?! What are you doing here?!”
Ignoring her, Song Ziqiong turned her head to exchange a glance with Chen Bai, who was sitting across from her.
Noting the faint exasperation in his eyes, she pressed her lips into a slight smile.
Chen Bai, too, looked both puzzled and bemused. Just that morning, he’d watched this elegant host on TV, calmly presenting the utterly irrelevant Jiangcheng morning news.
He and Song Ge had even made a passing joke about her—
And now, just a few hours later, this same host had shown up here, disheveled and desperate?!
Had she really delivered herself to them?
