Virus King - Chapter 97
Chapter 97: The Old Era and the New Era! Departure!
TL: Yang
People would never know how quickly things could change!
After that minor disturbance was ruthlessly snuffed out at its root by Chen Bai’s iron hand, the camp underwent a transformation over just two days. Comparing the current camp to its previous state was like comparing night to day!
On either side of the mountain road on East Mountain, several Evolvers had set up stalls. The items laid out for sale were lower-rank equipment scavenged from zombies after hard-fought battles.
The shouts of hawkers rose and fell in a continuous stream!
“F-Rank zombie mask! Same model as Lord Bai’s! Only five copper coins!”
“Blood-stained belt, level 2, a rare gem! Only five copper coins!”
“Fresh organic vegetables! Definitely not garbage, guaranteed green and pollution-free! Just one copper coin per catty!”
In less than a week, the shadows of the pre-apocalyptic modern world had mostly faded away.
In its place rose a unique, post-apocalyptic society—one made up of Evolvers and the families of powerful Evolvers.
Here, strength ruled supreme.
Yet, they had become accustomed to this, even feeling a bit fortunate.
Compared to the nearly ten million people struggling for survival in Jiangcheng a mere dozen kilometers away, a place resembling hell itself, they now had absolute safety within the massive walls built in just a few days.
They even had the freedom to hunt zombies beyond the perimeter without worry.
After all, the settlement possessed the zombie virus serum, a miraculous treasure!
However, soon enough, everyone manning stalls on both sides of the mountain road found their gazes drawn to the foot of the mountain path.
Some were wild refugee Evolvers who had escaped the city; others were family members of the guards from the early days.
At this moment, their eyes were filled with envy.
At the foot of the mountain, a large team of over two hundred people was entering the settlement.
Each person was drenched in the stench of blood, exuding an aura of brutal strength that words couldn’t quite capture.
“This is the cleanup squad for our settlement’s outer defenses! I heard every one of them is at least level 3! Their captains are all level 4 and above!”
“My god, it takes a thousand experience points just to go from level 2 to level 3—how much would it take to reach level 4?!”
“I heard Leader Song and Captain Leng Shuang can now enter the dungeon on the other side of the mountain sewers without needing Lord Chen to accompany them!”
“Are you kidding? When Lord Chen leads, do you think it’s a simple matter?! Currently, there are only six dungeons worldwide that have been recorded as cleared on Blue Star, and Lord Chen cleared two of them!”
“Lord Chen is incredibly strong! We’re all Evolvers too, but how…”
“Shh, it’s starting again…”
Everyone’s gaze shifted toward the commotion not far away.
A mixture of awe and trepidation showed on their faces.
Indeed, following the ranks of the two-hundred-plus team was a logistics crew of over a hundred people. Behind them, an endless line of basic wooden carts stretched down the mountain road for over a kilometer!
Each cart was loaded with tightly packed bodies.
There were countless zombie corpses, along with many corpses of zombified beasts.
Even a rough count would yield thousands, if not several thousand, bodies.
Under the horrified gaze of the crowd, these bodies were dumped at the edge of the mountain road, right outside the massive gate encircling East Mountain.
Then, as if suddenly possessed, the originally ash-grey city gate opened its blood-red maw!
Dozens of corpses were devoured instantly by the massive, slowly pulsing wall that moved like a living creature.
After consuming the bodies, the wall itself began to shift, spreading along the already-carved path and slowly extending around the settlement, like a living organism.
On the summit of East Mountain, a smaller wall also began to appear around the villa district.
A city within the city—this had been Chen Bai’s plan all along.
This was designed from the start when East Mountain was selected as a refuge.
The villa district was the core area. Even the elite members of the combat squads couldn’t simply take up residence here.
The summit’s villa district, the apartment buildings and housing on the mountainside, and the shacks and makeshift market stalls at the foot of the mountain divided the vast area of East Mountain into three distinct tiers.
As people fed the ever-growing Flesh Mountain Wall with zombie corpses pulled from Jiangcheng, Chen Bai stood atop the villa district, gazing down on the entire East Mountain as though a monarch surveying his kingdom.
And indeed, there was nothing wrong with viewing it that way.
In just two or three days, Chen Bai’s level had risen by one. Aside from sweeping through the old sewer dungeon again and obtaining another piece of the Plague Set, he even took Song Ziqiong and the others to clear out nearby zombie-infested streets and made another trip to Jiangcheng University. There, he managed to solo the incinerator once more after its cooldown period.
However, oddly enough, this time when he re-entered the dungeon, the enormous incinerator had vanished completely.
Only the reanimated “anatomy instructors” remained, and the final boss, a bio-mutant, had been pieced together from their corpses. Its strength had noticeably diminished as well!
This made Chen Bai even more curious about the “Face of ???,” still stored away in a secret warehouse. Yet, he still refrained from taking it out casually.
If that item truly had been marked by the God of Trade, it would be a serious problem if discovered.
Standing beside him, Song Ziqiong sighed and asked, “You’re leaving?”
Chen Bai nodded.
“I don’t expect to be gone long. I need to bring someone back to East Mountain. The settlement’s defenses are now strong enough to protect itself. If anything happens, just reach out to me in the White Emperor’s Palace.”
Thanks to the Evolvers’ group chat, Chen Bai didn’t have to worry about the settlement in his absence, even though phones and other devices were useless now.
A week had passed since the apocalypse began, and if his memory was correct, the Demon Hunter profession scroll would soon become available.
“Safe travels! Your harem in the White Emperor’s Palace will be waiting for your return!” Song Ziqiong teased, showing a hint of reluctance for the first time. In these apocalyptic times, even someone as powerful as Chen Bai felt the poignancy of parting.
Yet, the man in front of her—who Song Ge often called a scoundrel—turned his head, giving her a once-over before suddenly asking, “Have you reached level five yet?”
Song Ziqiong blinked in surprise before realizing his meaning and rolling her eyes.
Just as she was feeling a little sentimental, he had to ruin the moment with a single line. Still, she nodded.
Chen Bai’s eyes lit up at her figure, now more curvaceous due to her enhanced physique.
“Well, what are you standing around for? Let’s go!”
What was that saying again?
“Perfectly ripe, delicious and refreshing!”
The dim sky was draped in heavy clouds.
The world’s transformation had begun quietly.
As the old era slowly faded and a new one took shape,
Chen Bai led the way forward.
