Virus King - Chapter 24
Chapter 24: Horde Unleashed! Chen Bai’s Power!
TL: YYang
Qionghai Tower.
Chen Bai had passed by this skyscraper countless times before the apocalypse descended. But back then, he could never have imagined coming here under such circumstances.
In the first basement level.
Chen Bai didn’t know what purpose this place had served before, nor did he care. All he knew was that now, this vast, empty basement was filled with massive iron cages.
Between the cages and where they were standing, there was a barrier of reinforced glass. From behind the glass, he could see the frenzied zombies behind those bars, their claws stretched out as if to reach him.
Each iron cage held at least twenty zombies, and a rough count revealed nearly two hundred of them.
Managing to capture this many living zombies before the apocalypse fully erupted?
Chen Bai wasn’t particularly shocked by these numbers.
He understood the arrival of the apocalypse too well.
Zombies, as the cataclysm that would rapidly decimate human civilization, hadn’t emerged in an instant. Over the past ten days, as the apocalypse took hold, the peculiar zombie virus had already begun to spread.
It lurked within everyone’s body.
Those with weak constitutions or severe genetic flaws would experience an accelerated outbreak. Those with slightly stronger bodies and fewer genetic defects would fully transform only once the doomsday magnetic surge enveloped the entire planet.
The former type of cases appeared rare, yet it was not uncommon to find people on the brink of zombification in places like Jiangcheng University’s affiliated hospital.
In other words, although the odds of early infection were slim, the sheer volume of people meant the numbers were still significant!
And for someone like Song Ziqiong, with an extensive network of resources in Jiangcheng, studying the zombie phenomenon and capturing these bloodthirsty creatures with limited combat ability hadn’t been too challenging.
Chen Bai glanced at the two dozen black-clad guards standing before the reinforced glass.
They kept their hands tucked inside their jackets.
Chen Bai cast a smirk in the direction of Song Ziqiong, who now seemed noticeably more self-assured.
Was she trying to flaunt her strength?
But he paid it no mind; he knew that Song Ziqiong was not one to lose her composure so easily.
Even if she wanted to cross him, she wouldn’t pick this moment to do it.
Furthermore, if Song Ziqiong was intent on showing her might, Chen Bai had every intention of making this proud woman submit entirely.
For most people, what lay beyond that layer of reinforced glass was pure hell. Even with firearms, anyone facing those relentless zombies—who couldn’t be stopped unless shot squarely in the head and could run as fast as an average man—would simply be cannon fodder.
But not for Chen Bai.
To him, this was his playground.
“Open the door!”
Chen Bai’s voice carried a confident smile. He could already feel the Darklight Virus surging actively throughout his body, eager and excited.
The zombie virus, sharing the same origins as the Darklight Virus, was the perfect supplement for it. Nothing else compared.
With a single glance from Song Ziqiong, the door before the reinforced glass swung open.
Chen Bai stepped inside.
“Madam?!”
Song Ziqiong glanced around before saying, “Open one cage first…”
But before her words could finish, Chen Bai’s voice rang out through the barrier of reinforced glass, calm and unhurried:
“Open them all. No need to waste time—Song Ge’s waiting for us back home!”
Hearing this, Song Ziqiong felt a surge of anger and spat furiously, “Then open them all!”
“Roar!”
With a metallic clang, every iron gate swung open at once.
The zombies, with their slow minds, seemed unable to understand why they had suddenly been set free. But their fixation on flesh and their heightened sense of smell stirred them into a frenzy, driving them to rush in Chen Bai’s direction!
In the massive underground hall spanning thousands of square meters, the scene instantly transformed into a zombie playground.
Cold sweat trickled down the foreheads of Shuang’er and the bodyguards alike.
With nearly two hundred frenzied zombies, their small-caliber handguns would be useless—they’d be dead in less than a minute! Escape was equally hopeless, for the vast openness of the basement left them nowhere to hide or maneuver.
Without heavy weaponry, survival in these conditions was impossible.
But obviously, even with all of the Song family’s power, they didn’t have access to that kind of firepower here.
Under these circumstances, how could Chen Bai possibly break through?
All eyes were on him, hearts in their throats, each person watching the lone figure who had stepped into the horde.
Even Song Ziqiong felt an unsettling mix of emotions. She wanted to see this man—this man who had humiliated her for the first time, who was over twenty years her junior—die amidst the swarm.
And yet, she couldn’t bear the thought of him dying like this.
Unfazed by the growing horde spilling out of their cages, Chen Bai showed no hint of fear.
He held no weapon in his hands. With his strength now approaching thirty, his body itself had become his deadliest weapon!
Faced with the encroaching zombie horde, Chen Bai didn’t dodge, didn’t analyze his surroundings, but casually reached into his pocket and took out an oddly shaped, unusual mask, which he placed over his face.
The small stat boost it provided was nothing to speak of.
After all, with it being a lowly F-Rank item, Chen Bai hadn’t expected much from it.
However, it did shield him from the putrid stench of the zombies’ decay.
Even killing zombies warranted some sanitation, after all!
Otherwise, with all these bacteria and viruses around, he might get sick.
With his mask now smeared with blood and insanity, Chen Bai’s cold, ruthless gaze became even more pronounced.
Then, in a burst of agility near thirty, Chen Bai accelerated, launching himself toward the horde, to the shock and horror of everyone watching.
In a blur of motion, he swung his leg with terrifying force, the kick whipping forward and exploding the head of the first zombie in an instant!
Silence fell over the scene.
