Chapter 454: The Arrival in Northwatch Town
Northwatch, or Northwatch Town, was the destination of the couple’s journey.
It was a burgeoning town with a population of just over two thousand, mostly composed of displaced farmers from the Northwestern Bay and refugees recruited from other regions. The majority were employed in government-run farms established by the Administration Council, as part of its land reclamation project.
The so-called land reclamation project aimed at developing the vast regions north of the Weiss River. Previously, these areas were covered in forests, swamps, and wastelands. Now, a series of towns and administrative villages had been established, showcasing the benefits of being a border lord – the ability to expand one’s territory into unclaimed lands.
Northwatch was the northernmost of these towns. Standing on the main street of the town, one could still see the dense forests in the distance, yet to be cleared, with the vast Rocky Mountains extending further north.
The town mayor of Northwatch welcomed Lieutenant Makarov and his wife at the town’s Administration Hall.
“Welcome, Lieutenant. With you here, we can finally start our school.”
The mayor, Rosicrini, a somewhat portly man with a beaming face, was evidently overjoyed.
He extended his hand towards another man leaning on a cane and dressed in a military uniform. “Allow me to introduce you. This gentleman is the head of the local military service station…”
Makarov laughed heartily, “No need for introductions, we know each other. Long time no see, Gernot!”
He then embraced the man tightly.
Gernot, equally excited to see an old friend, explained to the curious mayor, “We served in the same company. I was wounded in Emden, losing my left leg, so I had to leave active service early.”
Makarov inquired, “I was informed that I would also be taking over as the head of the military service station here. I didn’t expect to be taking over your role. What made you decide to leave?”
“My father asked me to come back and help manage our family-run tavern. He’s getting on in years, so I had to resign.”
“I see. Well, I wish you a happy and fulfilling new life, Mr. Gernot, the big boss.”
“Hahaha, stop making fun of me. By the way, how’s young Josh doing?”
“Oh, that ambitious lad! He passed the exam and is now studying at the military academy. Who knows, when he graduates, I might have to salute him as an officer!”
The mayor patiently waited for their conversation to conclude, then proceeded to introduce another individual to Makarov, “This is the captain of the Northwatch Town militia – Kajit.”
Kajit, a young man in his early twenties, looked up at Makarov with admiration, noting the two stars and a bar on his shoulder.
“It’s an honor to meet you, Lord Makarov.”
“Just call me Lieutenant.”
Makarov smiled and shook his hand firmly.
As a reserve officer, Makarov also bore the responsibility of guiding the local militia’s training.
