Chapter 25: Should He Go for a Face-to-Face Assault?
TL: YYang
“Let’s go. First, to the cafeteria for food.”
Shen Yuan rubbed his growling stomach. He didn’t know why he was getting hungry so quickly; he had just eaten breakfast after 9 AM.
Could it be that he had expended too much energy last night?
They said women were like wolves at thirty and tigers at forty, but Fang Minhui was clearly only in her early twenties. How had she unlocked this mode already?
Shen Yuan sighed softly. It seemed he really needed to exercise more; otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to handle this kind of vixen.
“That son of a bitch Old Cao went to bed at three last night, same as me. He’s still lying in bed now.”
Huang Haibao had finished brushing his teeth and washing his face by now. He picked up his glasses from the desk and put them on.
“This son of a bitch can eat and sleep, and on top of that, he snores. He really deserves to die.”
Looking at the thunderously snoring Cao Shunjin, Shen Yuan remembered the countless nights he had been tormented by him. A mischievous thought arose. He climbed the ladder of the bunk bed and yanked off the blanket. “Fire! Get up!”
Cao Shunjin was jolted awake with a start and immediately sat up in bed. “Where’s the fire? Where’s the fire?”
He shook his head and looked around, but there was no commotion. The only thing in the dorm was two bastards laughing at him. He was so angry he started cursing, “Are you guys trying to die?!”
Cao Shunjin’s expression was also quite comical, a mixture of grogginess from being woken up, panic from the scare, and finally, anger at having his sweet dreams disturbed.
“Hurry up and get up. Let’s go downstairs to eat,” Shen Yuan said with a laugh.
After being jolted like that, Cao Shunjin couldn’t get back to sleep. He could only curse as he got out of bed, quickly washed up, and followed Shen Yuan and the other guy downstairs to the cafeteria.
Once in the cafeteria, the three of them got their food and sat down. Cao Shunjin suddenly remembered something. “There’s a class dinner tonight. Are you guys going?”
Shen Yuan was taken aback. Why a sudden class dinner? They saw each other in class every damn day, what was there to gather for?
Huang Haibao shook his head like a rattle drum. “Not going, not going.”
“Why not?” Cao Shunjin asked while eating.
“Didn’t you see the message in the class group chat? That son of a bitch Li Zhanpeng went to a 4S dealership this morning and ordered a BMW. He even posted the purchase contract in the group.”
“I suspect he specifically suggested the class president schedule the dinner for today,” Huang Haibao said resentfully.
Shen Yuan didn’t usually pay attention to the class group chat; it was always muted. And Cao Shunjin had just woken up, so he hadn’t noticed the group messages either.
The two of them simultaneously took out their phones to check the class group chat. Sure enough, there were 99+ messages.
Scrolling up through the chat history, they found Li Zhanpeng’s pretentious text: “The weather is nice this weekend. I suggest everyone go out for a walk.”
The key was the picture he attached below it. On the surface, it was a cloudless sky, but in the bottom right corner, the sign for a BMW 4S dealership was exposed, with the BMW logo clearly visible.
As soon as this picture was posted, someone immediately replied below, “Holy crap, Brother Peng went to get a BMW?”
“Brother Peng is awesome! Which BMW model did you order?”
“Doesn’t matter which model, it has to be at least 300,000, right?”
“Sigh, I probably won’t be able to afford a BMW even ten years after graduation.”
“Brother Peng, I only have one question: are the saleswomen at the BMW 4S dealership good-looking?”
There were many more such flattering comments below. And amidst everyone’s shock, Li Zhanpeng casually dropped another sentence, along with a picture of the purchase contract.
“It’s not that expensive. BMW has great discounts right now.”
Shen Yuan opened the picture and saw that the model was a BMW 3 Series, the 325Li. The on-the-road price was 280,000, and the important part was the payment method: paid in full.
As soon as this picture was posted, another wave of shock erupted below.
“See? Tonight’s dinner is probably going to be another one-man show for Li Zhanpeng.”
Huang Haibao pouted, thinking that tonight’s dinner would be Li Zhanpeng’s bragging feast. Should he go just to be the target of his face-to-face assault?
Especially since their dorm, 503, didn’t get along with Li Zhanpeng.
Now that Third Brother had been reduced to a second-generation debtor, there was no one left in the class who could suppress his pretentious aura.
“If we don’t go, wouldn’t the two hundred yuan class fee we paid this semester be wasted?”
Cao Shunjin’s eyes drooped. He thought about how they paid two hundred in class fees every semester, and it was all gone in one meal. The key was that he never even got full.
But if he didn’t go, it would be a pity. Thinking about them feasting on his money, Cao Shunjin felt the loss would be even greater.
“Fuck! The class president and the youth league secretary never ask for our opinion when they organize these dinners.”
Huang Haibao also realized this problem and cursed angrily.
Shen Yuan looked at the lively class group chat and couldn’t help but want to laugh. This Li Zhanpeng was really damn adorable when he was showing off.
But then again, at this stage of their schooling, everyone’s mode of transportation was either the bus or a bicycle. Even electric scooters were rare.
So, if one student in this context could already drive a BMW, it was indeed something worth showing off.
Shen Yuan himself was no exception. When he bought the 4 Series back then, there was a bit of vanity involved.
However, Li Zhanpeng was just playing with his leftovers. Besides, he wouldn’t stoop to such a low-level brag, even posting the damn purchase contract in the group chat.
Shen Yuan thought that a gathering like this, in this context, would be completely meaningless. Besides, he saw his classmates every day. So, he shook his head and said, “You guys can go if you want. I’m not going.”
Hearing this, Huang Haibao and Cao Shunjin exchanged a knowing look, seemingly realizing something.
After a long silence, Huang Haibao sighed softly and patted Shen Yuan’s shoulder comfortingly. “Third Brother, we understand.”
They both knew that Shen Yuan’s family had gone bankrupt, and their house and car had been sold.
Furthermore, Li Zhanpeng had always been suppressed by Third Brother before, so he had always disliked him.
Now that Li Zhanpeng had bought a car, his momentum was at its peak. Who knew how he would subtly mock Third Brother tonight?
With so many classmates present, and Third Brother being someone who cared about his pride, it was better for him not to attend.
“What the hell do you guys understand?!” Shen Yuan said irritably.
After graduating from high school, Shen Yuan had attended one reunion, and it was truly boring.
His class had been an experimental class, full of top students. Half of them had gotten into 985 and 211 universities, and two had even scored high enough for Tsinghua and Peking University. Even the less successful ones had gotten into first-tier universities.
There were only three or four underachievers like Shen Yuan who had ended up in second-tier universities. In that environment, he really felt invisible.
After all, student life was different from the real world. Once you entered society, everyone measured a person by their annual income or social status.
In high school, everyone discussed test scores and problem-solving strategies.
To put it bluntly, it was a bragging session for the top students.
Of course, they were now in their third year of university, with one foot in society. Many students had already adopted the ways of the working world and started to judge based on benefits.
For example, they would judge whether a person was worth befriending based on their family background and origins.
For instance, the few people who were just sucking up to Li Zhanpeng in the group chat were clearly just flattering him.
No one was stupid. Not many people actually liked playing with someone like Li Zhanpeng, but they believed his wealthy family background was worth cultivating a relationship with in advance.
So, at tonight’s gathering, it would most likely be a group of “astute” classmates sucking up to Li Zhanpeng.
Just then, Shen Yuan’s WeChat dinged, pulling him back from his thoughts.
He opened it and saw that it was a voice message reply from “Life of a Three-Year-Old,” Li Yuhang.
Shen Yuan played it. The voice was groggy, and he could barely make out what he was saying. He had probably just woken up.
The gist was: how did you know I was broke lately, you son of a bitch, your timing is perfect. Then he invited Shen Yuan to his place for dinner and clubbing tonight to relax.
Shen Yuan wasn’t really interested in clubbing and partying right now. He was about to send a voice message to decline, but just then, the system’s voice suddenly sounded in his mind.
[Quest: A perfect life requires not only the favor of the opposite sex but also the foundation of a career.]
[Time-limited Quest: The Host will receive 1 million in exclusive investment funds. Invest all 1 million within one week.]
[Quest Reward: Any business income obtained from any commercial activity will receive a two-fold cash rebate.]
Whoa!
Shen Yuan’s heart skipped a beat. He hadn’t expected another quest from the great System Father, and this time it was a career-type quest.
Actually, he had been worrying about this for the past two days. With so much money in his card and the need to spend it frequently, he needed a source for it, right?
Otherwise, people would think the money was obtained through some improper means.
So, he desperately needed an investment or a business to cover up his constantly expanding assets.
Shen Yuan carefully examined the panel. He found that the system’s reward was also very generous: as long as he earned revenue, he would get a two-fold rebate.
This meant that as long as the business he invested in was profitable, even if the profit margin was slim, after being doubled, the returns would be very substantial.
Thinking about it carefully, he could even make money at a loss.
Let’s do the math. For example, if a store’s daily revenue was 10,000, but the operating costs were 12,000, that would be a loss of 2,000.
But with the system’s two-fold revenue rebate, he would receive 20,000. After deducting the 12,000 operating costs, he would have a net profit of 8,000, a profit margin of 66.6%!
